Why isn't ChatGPT recommending my business? (and how to fix it)

Updated · 2 min read

You asked ChatGPT for the best business like yours in your city, and it named three competitors but not you. It's frustrating, but there's almost always a concrete reason, and most of them can be fixed.

Work through these causes in order. The first ones are quick to check and, when they're the problem, quick to fix.

Cause 1: ChatGPT can't read your website

If your robots.txt, a security plugin, or a setting at your hosting or CDN provider blocks OpenAI's answer crawlers, ChatGPT can't read your pages and has to rely on what other sites say about you. This is the most common cause, and the quickest to fix.

Check it with the free AI crawler checker. Make sure OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are allowed. Blocking GPTBot (training) is fine. If robots.txt looks right but you use Cloudflare or a similar service, read is your hosting blocking AI crawlers?.

Cause 2: Your website doesn't say clearly what you do and where

AI assistants match questions to plain words. If your homepage says “Excellence since 1998” but never “plumber in Leeds” or “family dentist in Austin”, the AI has little to match.

  • Put your main service and city in your homepage headline and first paragraph.
  • Give each main service its own page that names the area you serve.
  • Make sure the text is real page text, not only inside images or loaded by JavaScript. The AI readiness checker flags this.

Cause 3: Machines can't tell who you are

Without structured data, an AI has to guess your business type, address and hours from loose text. Add LocalBusiness structured data, or a specific type such as Dentist or Plumber, with your name, address, phone, hours and area served. The free schema generator creates it in a minute.

Cause 4: You're missing from the listings AI checks

ChatGPT confirms businesses through map listings, directories and review sites. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, or you have no Bing Places, Apple Business Connect or main industry directory profiles, competitors who do have them look more certain. See the business listings AI assistants rely on.

Cause 5: Your details don't match across the web

An old address on one directory, a different phone number on another, or a slightly different business name makes AI less sure the listings are all you. Use exactly the same name, address and phone number everywhere, including your website.

Cause 6: Competitors have more (and more specific) reviews

AI assistants summarise what customers say. Businesses with recent, detailed reviews that mention the service and the place (“fixed our boiler in Leeds the same day”) are easier to recommend. Read how to get more Google reviews the right way.

Cause 7: You checked once, with one question

AI answers vary between people, places, phrasing and days. One missing answer doesn't mean you're never recommended, and one good answer doesn't mean you always are. Check many realistic questions, and track the rate over time. Read how to track your AI visibility over time.

What to do next

  1. Run the free AI readiness checker and fix anything marked “Fix”.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and the main directory for your industry.
  3. Ask recent happy customers for a review that mentions what you did and where.
  4. Re-check in a few weeks. New listings, content and reviews usually take several weeks to show up in AI answers.

Questions

Can I ask ChatGPT to add my business?

No. There's no form or payment that puts you in ChatGPT's recommendations. It recommends what it can find, read and trust across the web, so the fixes above are the way in.

ChatGPT gives wrong details about my business. What do I do?

Find where the wrong detail comes from (often an old directory listing or an outdated page on your own site), correct it there, and make your website and main listings consistent. AI answers update as sources are re-read.
