How to get more Google reviews (the right way)
Updated · 2 min read
Reviews influence which businesses AI assistants recommend. They summarise what customers say, and they notice recent, detailed reviews that mention specific services and places. More genuine reviews help both Google rankings and AI answers.
1. Ask every customer, at the right moment
The best moment is right after a good experience: when the job is finished, the treatment went well, or the customer thanks you. Ask in person, then follow up the same day with a direct link.
2. Make it one tap
Send a direct link to your Google review form. In your Google Business Profile, look for the option to ask for reviews or share a review link, then copy it. Put the link in follow-up emails, text messages and receipts. A QR code at the counter works well for walk-in businesses.
3. Suggest what to mention (without scripting)
You can't tell customers what to write, but you can suggest topics: “If you have a moment, it really helps to mention what we did for you and where you're based.” Reviews like “Fixed our boiler in Leeds the same day” help AI match you to the right questions.
4. Reply to every review
Thank people for positive reviews, and reply calmly and helpfully to negative ones. Replies show that you care, and prospective customers (and AI summaries) see them.
5. Know the rules
- Google: doesn't allow incentivised reviews, reviews written by staff, or “review gating” (only asking happy customers).
- United States: the FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials prohibits fake reviews, buying reviews and suppressing negative ones, with penalties for violations.
- European Union: consumer protection law prohibits fake reviews and requires businesses that publish reviews to say how they check they come from real customers.
Never buy reviews, offer discounts in exchange for reviews, or post reviews yourself. Beyond the legal risk, platforms can remove all your reviews.
Questions
How many reviews do I need?
There's no magic number, but compare yourself with the businesses AI recommends for your category and city. The Eudoxia check shows who those competitors are.
Do reviews on other sites matter too?
Yes. AI assistants read many sources, including industry directories and review sites. Keep your profiles active where your customers look.
