How to track your AI visibility over time
Updated · 2 min read
Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and you may get different businesses. AI answers vary with phrasing, location, time and the sources the assistant happens to read. That makes a single check a snapshot, not a verdict.
Tracking is about seeing the trend, and catching problems early. Here's what to measure and how often.
What to measure every month
- Mention rate: across a fixed set of realistic customer questions, how often you're named.
- Position: when you're named, whether you're first, second or further down.
- Competitors: who's named instead of you, and whether that list is changing.
- Sources: which websites the AI relied on. New sources tell you where to be listed.
- Website readiness: whether AI crawlers can still read your site, and whether your key pages, structured data and sitemap are intact.
Use the same questions each time
Write 10 to 20 questions customers really ask, mixing “best [service] in [city]”, price, availability and specific needs. Keep the list fixed so month-to-month changes mean something. Add new questions occasionally, but report them separately.
What can silently break your visibility
- A plugin or hosting update that starts blocking AI crawlers. See is your hosting blocking AI crawlers?
- A redesign that removes text, structured data or whole pages.
- A “noindex” tag left on after building a new page.
- A changed phone number or address that wasn't updated on your listings.
- A competitor collecting reviews faster than you.
Most of these don't show up as an error anywhere. You only notice when enquiries drop.
A simple tracking routine
- Monthly: run your question set and note mention rate, position and the top competitors.
- Monthly: run the AI readiness checker on your homepage, and check a few key service pages.
- After any website or hosting change: check crawler access with the AI crawler checker the same day.
- Quarterly: review your listings and reviews against the competitors AI names most.
If you'd rather automate it, Eudoxia Pro checks each website daily (crawler access, structured data, sitemap, noindex), re-audits the whole site monthly, and emails you when something gets worse.
Questions
How long before changes show up in AI answers?
Fixing crawler access can show within days. New listings, content and reviews usually take several weeks, because AI assistants and search indexes need to re-read the sources.
Should I check every day?
Not the AI answers themselves: daily swings are mostly noise. Daily checks are useful for your website's technical health, because a blocked crawler or broken page is something you want to know about straight away.
